GROVES DAY

Today is a national holiday -- "Groves Day".

No, not General Leslie Richard Groves who served as military director of the atomic bomb project in the 1930's -- as so many of you were thinking. Not so fast...

Sara Groves & Shaun Groves.
They're not related.
They're not working on a record together.
They don't live in the same state.
I haven't the slightest idea if they even know each other.

But they seem to share much in common.

Neither seems to care much for fame or recognition.
Neither seems to care about making music for the sake of industry or career.
Both seem to value songwriting and honest expression in their art & songs.
Both place faith, family & mission above all in their life - even if it means sacrificing money & accolades.

I have great respect for both of them as friends & artists.

I remember walking by the table. The table with Compassion packets in the lobby, one that has been there for most of my concerts over the last few years. The packets of children were there for others to sponsor. I would speak on their behalf, invite friends and fans to be a part of an amazing child sponsorship program in 27 of the poorest countries in the world and then i'd move on to the next town.

But this day was different.

I walked by, stopped and saw J.Love.

Now, don't confuse this with J.Lo - the lovely, yet moderately talented singer/actress.

No, this little guy was Jhyvelove, a 6 yr old boy living in northwest Haiti.

And though we already had several kids we were sponsoring through Compassion, I just knew J.Love would be among them.

8 months later, all hell broke loose in Haiti.

On my latest visit to Haiti, I talked with dozens of people describing the quake. The instant reaction for many was that the world was ending. Can you imagine being in a place with such noise, destruction & chaos that your first thought is the Apocalypse? It didn't seem possible. Yet neither did the destruction that remained at every turn. In Haiti, the country hailed as the poorest and most corrupt in the Western Hemisphere, worst case scenarios had become then norm. My heart, as i'm sure yours is after seeing even the news stories, was heavy.

Before I left, the 6 yr old boy with the funny name made a 4 hour trek to Port-Au-Prince to meet me. He wore a new dress shirt his mother had purchased for our meeting. I asked him if we could call him J.Love. He shrugged and then smiled. I took that as a yes.

His eyes were filled with the same wonder that i see in my own 6 yr old first grader back home. His new pressed shirt as white as his skin was dark. He was soft spoken as this was his first visit to the "big city".

We laughed. We played tag. We drank Coca Cola. We took turns on photo booth - the program on my computer that distorts your face. His little mind was blown!

J.Love was accompanied by his Compassion director who detailed the weeks immediately after the quake. Though not in the hardest hit part of the country, their community still had damage, injuries & fear of aftershocks was widespread. He explained that Compassion immediately assessed needs for every family with children in their program. Clean water, food, medical attention & housing aid was distributed accordingly and done so quickly - thanks mostly to the Compassion emergency relief fund. This fund is an additional $7 a month that allows Compassion to respond immediately to disasters in Haiti, Sri Lanka, Indonesia or wherever the next disaster occurs.

Before leaving, I handed him a soccer ball. He handed me a bottle of lotion. He said it was for the lady in the picture, a family picture that included my lovely wife. What a little ladies man, that J.Love.

We said our goodbyes and I was overwhelmed with what hope this now 7 yr old has because of what God is doing in his life & community thanks to Compassion.

Since the quake, new sponsorships in Haiti have been put on hold. If you visit their site today, Compassion is not accepting new sponsorships because of the detailed work in caring for current children and families - over 50k across Haiti. However, after some begging and pleading, I received 150 packets of Haiti children who need a sponsor today.

I'm currently on the west coast for 10 days. My prayer and hope is that in the next 10 days, we find sponsors for all 150 kids. Kids like Kerlandie, whose packet caught my eye as i walked by the table again today. I'm calling it the HAITI 150. That sounds like a bike ride across Haiti..but its not - even better!

Health Care Reform

This is such a crazy complex issue.

There are so many uninsured, so many denied coverage and so many like me, who can afford great insurance, only to have preexisting conditions within my family be excluded from coverage.

Political views and fears aside, what should our priorities be in addressing this as a church? As believers?

Government may help, but what's the role of local churches in their communities?
Our church in Houston is wrestling with this and beginning to form a plan to engage now rather than waiting on others to serve those in need.

In the last year, I've seen first hand the extremes.
Miracles. Death. Suffering. Celebration.
Close friends, neighbors and friends.
It's been the fullest year of life on earth for me in both directions.

We're close to finishing the new rsb album and many of the songs reflect the heights and depths of our humanity and my encounters over the last year.

'Miracle' is one of these songs. It says:

Here's the scoop:

This was a benefit show that we hope will be rescheduled.

we were partnering with His Grace Foundation, a volunteer organization providing personalized, relationship-based support for families with a child having to undergo a bone marrow transplant due to a form of cancer, aplastic anemia, SKIDS, or a rare degenerative brain disease.

Our good friend, Suzanne, a student at Texas A&M, took the initiative to plan and organize this show in hope to raise awareness and funds for His Grace.

I would love it if we could fulfill her vision of this, despite of the crappy weather in BCS.

My youngest kid is full time entertainment.
At 3, he seems to have a nack for learning cuss words, drawing a crowd immediately in public and generally entertaining friends and strangers alike.
He love to scream poo poo at anyone who will listen. He does have a deep spiritual side as well, making him a hard kid to read.
Liz overheard him speaking to himself yesterday so she decided to write it all down for us.
Below is what transpired between him and his alter ego.
Btw, Dede & Lelly are big bro & sis (ethan and elle) and any events describing me and my behavior are completely false and i deny them all.

"Last night Jesus was in my room...He said 'It's daytime' and we got up, And God waked up Lelly. Oh, who waked up Dede? God waked up Dede and he got up and and we played...but we didn't hit. We built a clubhouse. Jesus almost wanted my drink. He was thirsty a little bit. Dadda dresses up like Jesus. I was hiding because i didn't want to see Dadda. He did this. (pulls his pants down to demonstrate) 'He shaked his booty.' Jesus had medicine. He gave me medicine because I was sick. He had white medicine. He has all kinds of colors. Sometimes I don't like pink. Sometimes I do like pink."

um..talk amongst yourselves, saints & sinners alike.

hope & sadness

My friend Chuck Walker would give you his car if you asked. Really.
He'd drop anything if you asked him and help.
His glass his half full and he doesn't see how life is viewed any other way.
I love him dearly.

Kristi was young, beautiful & would speak her mind at any moment when we first met her at Baylor. Chuck knew right away that this woman would be his wife. She was strong and became an amazing wife and mother.

Kristi passed away this morning, after battling cancer with more courage and strength than i'll ever have.
She is survived by Chuck and three amazing boys - Cade, Mason & Zane.

We are deeply sad. I'm not good and voicing all that wells up in these times. I'm praying for Chuck and the boys today.

Kristi believed with her whole heart in the gospel of Christ, the hope and grace that is the Christian faith. God was real and life changing to her. We join the family in mourning her loss and also celebrating her new life in heaven.
A life that knows no cancer, no pain, no sorrow.

Please pray for the Walker's.
I'll be traveling with friends to North Carolina next week to honor her life and family.

I know many of you have recently experienced great loss in your lives.
I return the prayers for you and together we find hope that this place is not home.

As we've prayed for Kristi over the last several months, I was working on rewriting an old hymn, one whose lyrics have been intertwined in my heart as I've longed for healing and comfort for the Walker's.

I have failed you - and am offering my hand if you'll unclinch your fist. Okay wait, that's from Obama's inauguration speech and was directed at Iran, but you get the point.

So, with all this non blogging free time I've been busy listening to music..sort of.

This is usually how it goes:
I get way way way too busy in life.
I forget to actually listen to music for the mere enjoyment of it.
Great friends like Taylor or Liz will interrupt my craziness and demand i listen to a particular song or artist. They have good taste and i usually love and wear the song out until i need a 37 day break from it as well.

Christmas sweaters, Advent & Raquel

Friends,
It's December already. How does that sneak up on me every year?

December means Tank demands that RSB dress alike in reindeer sweaters for the band christmas party.
December also is the beginning of Advent.
Growing up, I wasn't really sure what that meant.
I tended to focus on Christmas - and not necessarily on the 'birth of Jesus to a virgin in a barn with a star as bright as a moon to mark the glorious occasion' holiday.
No.

I was focused on the other Christmas - the "here's a list of crap i want and if my expectations are not met & i'm left without something i desired - the the day was a failure" kind of Christmas.

Anybody relate to that?
I guess its Christmas, American style.

These last few years, I've tried, with the help of friends and community, to leave my December consumeristic instincts behind and shift focus to the mystery and the beauty of a hopeful waiting - one that greatly anticipates a second chance at life. A Saviour coming in the most remarkable form - that of a baby.

Just writing that still baffles me.
I've had babies in my house and babies are messy.
Endearing, yet messy.

Anyway, as i sat down to write today there were a few things i wanted to share and invite you to join us in:

Join us in deconstructing our views of Christmas and then hopefully rebuilding what a true Christmas celebration looks like. How do we spend our time, energy and finances during this season. What if we gave clean water to children who are dying from water that is contaminated - rather than junk to people in our lives who don't need them? I'm not Scrooge saying don't give gifts . I guess I'm suggesting that we all try giving thoughtful gifts and focus attention to something larger than giving out of obligation.

Raquel led us through her neighborhood - one of many slums in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic. As a band, we signed up to sponsor this 8 year old girl, 1 of 10 children in her family, a few months before with COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL and now here we were - entering a shack the size of my bathroom where a family of 12 call home. Raquel's mother greeted us and we made small talk for a few minutes. When I asked what our sponsorship of Raquel has meant to the family, the mother replied: "The news of Raquel's sponsorship was life changing! We have prayed for this and the director informed us She was the first child sponsored in this new program at the church a few blocks away. We have hope for her and other children that they can dream and be healthy."

With tears in her eyes and in ours, I knew that the work of Compassion was something I wanted to be a part of for life.
When we left that day after visiting Raquels project, we were informed that there are dozens of kids in her project that are awaiting sponsorships. Since our visit, 3 hurricanes have pounded her community and the need for sponsors like you and I is even greater. I can think of no better way for us as friends to be connected and to view this season in a new light than this -- beginning and continuing a partnership with a young child who is longing for the chance to dream and hope - just like Raquel.

The Compassion project is called INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT MANANTIAL DE VIDA and i'm hopeful there are 50 of you who will join us in sponsoring a child in this specific community.

It was raining a lot and the water of the rain came into the house but now it is sunny. Take care a lot. Hugs and kisses to all of you. How is the music going?"

Rsb's intentions here should not to be confused with the gold rush, a dislike for anything east (we'll be on that particular coast this Oct) or the famed Michael Smith album during the late 80's focused on a young man heading westward on the great journey of life.

No, but..with a hurricane that's come and gone, power that's gone and come back & a city that is beginning to clean itself up - RSB is ready to leave Houston and head west.

We still have dates open on the west coast portion of HOPE, COFFEE, MELODY.

The tour will be RSB, Chris Seay & an opening act tbd.

Yard of the Month

A friend saw this house while driving around today.
I think it sums up Houston at this point in the clean up.

Our home church Ecclesia has two big projects that you can assist with:

TAFT STREET COFFEE
The coffee shop at Taft is now free - drinks, food, wifi..all free to anyone needing a place to retreat & cool off.
With the help of some donors, Ecclesia is underwriting the costs of making that happen - as well as providing essentials (toiletries, diapers, etc..)

THE BEACH FAMILY
Larry & Missy Beach took the call of loving orhpans seriously - they have 12 kids, many of whom have life threatening illnesses and were unwanted. They are a beautiful family who has lost their home in Clear Lake. Ecclesia is looking to rebuild a bigger more practical space for the Beach's.

Friends,

I cleaned out my fridge today.
We are still without power and 5 days of rotting and warming food created odor combinations never intended to be experienced by man.
I did survive such nasal trauma and wanted to say thanks to you for your thoughts and prayers - not only for RSB but for all of the Houston area.

storm / tour updates

friends,
The last 3 days have felt like 10.
As we've had some amazing nights to begin HOPE.COFFEE.MELODY tour, our thoughts and prayers have been with our families and friends in Houston.
After leaving suitcases in Dallas, leaving tour crew in OKC & driving for two days straight through the midwest -- RSB is playing tonight in Minneapolis/St. Paul as scheduled and will be heading back to Texas to be with family tomorrow morning.

Thanks to all of you who have reached out to us and have offered help and prayers.
Our families are safe and we had little damage in our homes, though our hometown of Houston and the neighboring cities have been beat up to say the least.

A few things I wanted to make sure you know about:

BREAKAWAY IN COLLEGE STATION will happen as planned.

HOUSTON tour stop is postponed for now, with details TBA.

BRYAN tour stop is 50/50 right now - please check back here and on our site for further announcements on thursday's show.

RSB / NYC celebrity sightings

I announced to the band as we entered the Holland Tunnel, that a sighting of someone considered famous has become a staple to each visit to Manhattan.
Now "famous" can be a relative term, dependent on the supposed celebrity and their current relevance in our culture. But nonetheless, someone will appear before us that is of a moderate to high level of celebrity.

There was the rather infamous Brett Michaels near Times Square.

The has been famous Loretta Switt from Mash - you know Hot Lips Houlihan!

Who could forget the judge from People's Court or the bass player from RadioHead.

I informed the New York rookies (Tyler & Tank) of these past sightings so to be on the lookout for A, B & even C list celebrities walking the avenues of SoHO or shopping for sneakers in Times Square.

Not even an hour into the metropolitan excursion, Sure enough .. There he was. A fellow Texan. A cast member from one of my favorite movies ever. A Texas Longhorn. Anthony, Dignon's kid brother - aka LUKE WILSON.

Now, never mind that he seemed like he'd rather be at the dentist than talking to me.
Never mind that he immediately folded his arms for the photo as i awkwardly tried to put my arm around him -- soon realizing that's now how movie stars take such photos, i tried to make it look like a stretch before the big photo shot.

Never mind all that. We were just two fellas from Texas hanging out shooting the breeze in a record store in SoHo. (okay, technically..taylor & i did most of the talking and by hanging out i mean we stood there for 25 seconds, then scurried off like awestruck middle schoolers).

He was actually a nice guy and the Luke Wilson sighting moved to tops on the RSB/NYC celebrity sightings list, just inching past the former Poison front man.
What about you - Anyone random or crazy famous cross your path while in the Big Apple?

We had a blast in NYC, a great time with our friends at Rev Gen in New Jersey & a memorable concert here in Orlando tonight. So thanks to everybody who's come out to see us this weekend. We really appreciate it.

I've just finished producing an ep with my friends from Reno,Nv.
Donald Zimmerman and company spent two weeks in Houston with us recording at HYDE PARK STUDIO and we're all really excited about their new project.

Here, the beloved bass player Cory is showing us his best rsb impersonation and what a fine one it is. And yes, that is the guitar playing, mustache / pajama sporting Tim at the end of the video segment. He's not as creepy as he looks, actually a fine fellow.

Summer is quickly fading. Pools are emptying, Kids are returning to their respective education institutions & RSB is leaving the humid confines of Houston and coming to see You!

We're excited to announce the fall tour details and we'd be thrilled to have you join us.

 Hope, Coffee & Melody will hit the road and share a unique experience in 30 cities across the country. This will be an intimate gathering of music, story, mission & great coffee to share together.
 
Joining the band will be Chris Seay (brother, pastor, author, friend), Chris Taylor (BEC recording artist) and singer songwriter Alli Rogers.
Here are some thoughts on the tour from Chris & Robbie:

"There is a story that brings us all together, only in the onslaught of nonstop media noise this Voice of Hope is drowned out. It's time to tune in. In one night of music, story, experience, and laughter we hope to connect rich and poor, hopeful and hopeless. Healthcare

Musicians have always been great at asking questions rather giving answers.
So today, I join them.

Health care in the US has been on my mind lately. From my 4 month old friend Zoe who is strong and alive against most odds -- to sitting with a 17 year old (who had no insurance of any kind) as he took his final breath at Houston's trauma hospital recently - it affects us all.

Anybody who knows me will know that I follow politics but don't trust any of these guys enough to actually work on behalf of the middle class & the poor. You gotta own an oil company or work in pharmaceuticals to get that kind of attention.

So, I turn to you instead.

Here is a question I submitted to Rick Warren at the request of his office - looking for questions to consider for Saturday night's joint interview at Saddleback Church with both candidates.

"We live in a country where the poor are turned away from hospitals and yet the rich have VIP access to the best medical care in the world. Is it possible to provide health care for every American who needs it (rich and poor), protect the high quality of health care in this country & avoid the bureaucratic chaos that often defines most agencies operated by the federal government?"

Studio of the Future

Well, it's been too long since we've met like this.
RSB has been traveling non stop, visiting friends in Pittsburgh, Decatur IL, Milwaukee, Nashville & Estes Park,CO
.
Now that I'm home for a few weeks, I'm able to write a lot which I am really enjoying.
I'm writing songs for RSB, songs for country music (yeah..they're not very good but i laugh at myself outloud as I pen lyrics about my 'truck being stuck in the mud' :) & songs about Liz and my crazy kids.

Anyway, I wanted to give you all a glimpse into the high life, the fast lane, the future of audio recording.
This is El Bano Studios - one of the finest studios on my street at the very least.
The acoustics rival LA & Nashville's finest recording rooms, no doubt.
Notice the high profile USB mic..yeah, it plugs right into the MacBook. Nothing but the best, folks.
And please don't overlook the double sinks and curling iron - essentials if you're going to record the magic.

So, it's pretty ghetto I know.
But until I write a hit song for the world to sing, I'll be content to bring a candle and kitchen table chair to the demo sessions and write for writing's sake.

It's been a good summer.
God's painting the sky and I'm armed with a camera phone.
I'm sure he's laughing but it's all i have.

This last week, I've been more moved and aware of God by simply looking up.
I don't know why but I've needed the reminder that God is grand, huge - bigger than my songs or my worries.

I then enter the doors of Chuy's and I can't think Him enough for allowing the combinations of flavors and spices that is "creamy jalapeno" sauce.
(We're gonna slow down the Chuy's visits though. The mgr. recently said to Liz and I upon arrival : "weren't you guys just in here 2 days ago?")

And so to you, I pray sunsets, tex-mex and the hugeness of God before the summer passes us all by.

RSB in The Dominican Republic

I'm writing tonight from the Dominican Republic.
I'm tired but realized I haven't shared much about our trip to this country.
Ryan and I, along with our wives, are here with Compassion International to learn more about the work God is doing in the lives of kids across the country.
Over 43,000 kids in the DR are being sponsored through Compassion and their lives are being changed forever.
Raquel is one of them.

Raquel is sponsored by RSB and we had the joy of meeting her today in person.
She is a beautiful, strong 7 year old girl.
We will be sharing more photos, video & telling you the remarkable stories of her family which includes 10 children.

But for now, please pray for her and the rest of our time here.

Twigger

West Virginia played host to RSB last weekend and we encountered an enthusiastic taxi drive named Twigger.
Twigger drove us to and fro in the early hours on Sunday and we thank him kindly for the transportation.
However, Twigger's skills go well beyond driving.
Be on the lookout for the T man's singing debut in the video below.
He's sure to be opening for RSB in no time.

Oh, and we also had a blast with everybody at KCU in Kentucky.

I'm taking the Mrs. to New York City next week and I'm not prepared.

I've visited NY several times in my life and Liz lived there briefly in college.

But I've been busy and the details of the trip have eluded my priority list..until now.

This is where you can help rescue me from trip implosion:

What is your favorite restaurant in all of the city? We like quiet, chill spots w/ great food but not too stuffy of a vibe. Any recommendations in SOHO and the Village would be awesome but we're open to any part of town.

I"m usually a hotel guru when i travel but New York is crazy expensive!

My Pops, My Old Man, My Friend

My Dad is a great human.
Edgar Martin Seay.
His story escapes me so often and i fail to share it because it seems so unlikely and far fetched.

He was born in Tokyo,Japan - a city of leave for his mother and father who were both fighting in the Korean war.

He was born May 31,1950.
His father was killed a few weeks later.
His mother passed only a few years after that.

He was raised by a loving grandmother and a firm grandfather who drove trucks with 1 arm, having lost the other in a bar shoot out (not far from where our church is today).

He found God and then music as a teenager growing up in our hometown of Houston,Tx.

As a 20 year old music leader he met my mother Cindy, the daughter of his pastor & boss. My grandfather, Robert Baldwin, was not a man that many would view as allowing any guy to date his daughter, much less marry in her late teens.
Ed Seay ignored such warning and followed love and seemingly lives to tell about it. (Thanks to Papa for not killing him)

He is a man that, for years, had no living relatives on his side. None.
Can you believe that?
He never used that as a crutch or allowed it to define him.
After marrying Mom 37 years ago, they are more in love than ever.

A man who carried the Seay name all alone now has 5 kids & 15 grandkids.

He has served faithfully as a pastor at the same church for the last 18 years, during which time he earned his doctorate in theology & serves on the board of trustees of his alma mater, Houston Baptist University.

My dad loves God deeply.
He loves people sincerely.
He adores his family immensely.
He doesn't give a crap about status or wealth.
He loves golf, the Beatles & buying every toy ever invented for his wild grandkids.

He is a father who told me to pursue music when nobody was listening to my albums.
He is a Dad who told me to marry for love and not worry about the rest.
He is a friend who balances reason with great abandon and lives life fully.
He is a parent who I long for my kids to emulate.

Pops - we love you.
Happy Fathers Day to my hero.

Ahh..Vacation

This is my youngest son.
He sends his greetings from gotham city.
We've been vacating at the beach.
I'm writing now at 1:37 am,back home & due to awake in 4 hours to catch a flight to chicago.

We just returned from cramming 26 people in 1 beach house and actually loved every minute of it.

I'm thankful this morning ... for family, sunsets, batman goggles, cheeseburgers & frank sinatra records.

I know many of you reading may need a vacation and you've been going through crap in your life these last few weeks or months.

My hope is that no matter where you are or what is happening around you, we all find time today to give thanks to God for the small and grand blessings in our lives.

Ryan the skater

I was a prep in high school.
To clarify, at my rural high school, one was either a KICKER or a PREP.
So even though i wore flip flops and t shirts every day, i got the prep label.

The great bass playing Ryan Owens?
A skater. A skater that played in bands covering Red Hot Chili Pepper songs.
He was cleary much cooler than i was, no question.
He actually knows how to do stuff on that skate board that's really..um..gnarly.
(He was actually sponsored by some company in high school to travel and do skate deals..i am quickly sounding ignorant to the ways of the skate community..but i know it was something cool :)

So today, in between playing 3 services at ecclesia with rsb, Ryan made time to attend the opening of a new skate park near downtown Houston.

He sent me this picture of him and Carabeth Burnside, the supposed greatest female skater that has ever lived and I thought you folks deserved to see how Mr. Owens spends his free time. Um, Is she holding a HOT POCKET?

His youngest daughter Maria passed away last night after a tragic accident at the family home in Tennessee. Maria was 5 years old.

Yeah, that's correct.
I think i may have a computer injury.
Not a football injury.
Not a mountain climbing or running injury.
Nothing even remotely cool and adventurous.
Not even a surfing or boogie boarding injury from saturday's time in the Pacific.

No, the typing seems to have gotten the best of me.
Its my right shoulder and well..it hurts and for those of you who don't know - pain and me are a volatile combination. I'm, what some call on the street, a wuss.

Am I alone in my wimp state here?
Anybody else ever felt like typing or something completely non contact has caused them bodily harm?

RSB made its way to southern California this week and I promise you all that the weather is horrible, the ocean water is cold, the food stinks & we're having a horrible time.

Okay, none of that is true but that's what we're telling my wife, who i owe a trip to California soon.

It's an amazing weekend to be here and we had such a great show with our friend Josh & the boys of Telecast, as well as the fine folks of Menifee,Ca last night. Thanks to everybody who joined us.

Some other highlights thus far, you're asking?
Why yes .. slideshow, please!

Jerry and Ryan, upon arrival at San Diego International Airport, are seen here with a $10 donation from a fellow passenger who was arriving back home. We don't normally receive monetary donations after departing a plane but a man who overheard us talking about music and God knows what, walked up and handed us cash.
And we thought Texas was generous. San Diego - supporting the arts!

Need I say more? When in California, it's a must stop for any burger loving American. (Ryan looks stunned in the presence of such culinary greatness)

Our friends at Taylor Guitars invited us over to El Cajon to tour the factory and get some work done on my guitar. If you're ever near San Diego, you HAVE to call Taylor and check on getting a tour (i believe its fridays only).
It's amazing how much detail goes into making these guitars. I love my acoustics and to see how they come to life is really cool.
Thanks to Robin, Bob B. and the whole crew for making us feel at home.

Obviously, there are guitars and guitar shells everywhere in the factory.

Here is my guitar getting worked on in the Taylor repair shop. ( they had the guitar taken apart in minutes..crazy to see!)

These huge machines are a part of the production process. It felt like Mr. Rogers factory tours. (remember those?) Here, the machine is sanding and grooving the necks to create frets...or something :)

MY FAVORITE SONGS..for now

I love lists.
Top restaurants, favorite cities, top movies..whatever.

So i couldn't resist a posting of some of my favorite songs from the last few weeks.
I don't often have loads of free time to sit with entire albums anymore. My record label won't like to hear it, but I really enjoy buying singles. I'm the target market for iTunes, i guess.
This usually results in purchasing songs that I love and listening them into the ground.

Now, I should stop and clarify that my favorite song of all time is FLY ME TO THE MOON by Frank Sinatra. I also enjoy the version by Astrud Gilberto but this list will be narrowed to songs that i've been wearing out on my ipod recently.

COLDPLAY - VIVA LA VIDA
this is one of the best songs i've ever heard - the more i listen, i love it even more. Am I alone? Do you like the new single?

TWO
ELIOT MORRIS - FAULTLINE
An amazing song from a friend of mine. Eliot and I were both in a contest at a local club in Houston 10 years ago, both of us broke and hoping to win $500 (i won a stereo,i think :) neither of us knowing if music would be our future. Eliot went on to sign with Universal and has toured with Counting Crows and others and become a wonderful songwriter. Check his music out at www.eliotmorris.com

RAY LAMONTAGNE - BE HERE BE NOW
i first heard this song in a subpar chick flick but the melody is addicting and we immediately searched for it on iTunes. His voice is haunting on this track.

Come on, its Travis. Great song from my favorite band.

FIVE
PATTY GRIFFIN - RAIN
Of all the Patty Griffin songs that i've loved over the years, this one still makes me cry like a baby. Nobody has a voice like Patty Griffin.

JON FOREMAN - YOUR LOVE IS STRONG
I've been such a huge fan of the seasonal ep's and this song stands out as a favorite.

JOHN MAYER - BELIEF
I tried to pretend that John Mayer was not a genius because sometimes he makes funny faces when he sings and i found him a bit annoying early in his career. And then he released Continuum and I think its one of the best albums in decades. Simple in production and thougtful (for the most part) in lyric.

EIGHT
DAVID CROWDER BAND - THE GLORY OF IT ALL
I'm such a fan of their music and this song is one of my favorite songs ever from DCB.

NINE
RADIOHEAD - BODYSNATCHERS
I'm out of town this week and Radiohead is playing in my hometown. A moment of silence, please.

TEN
SHANE AND SHANE - VISION OF YOU
Hearing these guys sing never gets old. This is a great song of worship.

My friend Zach sent me the picture and i thought it was humorous, especially seeing my friend Brandon Heath look on in agreement (look closely).

So that explains what's above.
Below, you ask?

This is an interview with the well known blogger, Kat (thesecretlifeofkat.com) and i thought i'd share with the tens of you who stumble upon my ramblings and can't click away fast enough.
(*and no, this is not me interviewing myself, but the mere thought of it just now makes me wonder at the possibilities)

so here we go:

--- What inspired the theme of Give Yourself Away? ---

First off, thanks for the invite to your blog kingdom.
Your reputation precedes this written exchange as one who is loved by thousands if not dozens of readers everywhere - and my wife likes you which carries value far beyond monetary measure.
Give Yourself Away was supposed to be my album, with my songs and my vision. God told me to screw off, in a Godly way of course, and He began to cross my path repeatedly with those in great need in situations where i couldn't turn my back and pretend all was well in happy land.
My life, my church and the music we were writing couldn't escape the grasp of mission and the idea that Jesus calls us all to something bigger than just prosperity and peace.
The storms of poverty and illness is waiting for Jesus followers to drive in and take up residence under dark clouds of sacrifice and little reward - and those basic premises of faith became the foundation for the new album.

--- Based on the theme of the album (and many of your wife's blog posts - one of which really resonated with me - was titled How Can We Not Move?), there's seems to be a lot of passion in your family for those in need. How has that affected the way you live and your daily perspective? ---

Well, I'm still a selfish pig, if that's what you're asking.
I wish it weren't true.
I'm still fuming this morning as my skim milk latte was not to my liking and i considered sharing my deep frustration with the barista. Luckily I was rescued from myself in such a weak moment by Kanye West.
"i've never heard Kanye playing in a coffee shop," i blurted aloud to no one in particular, though the unqualified young barista stared back with eternal blankness.
Kanye rarely leads to moral victories or even anger restraint in any scenario, however the unique combination of coffee and "Stronger" gave me reason to laugh aloud and recognize what a idiot I was becoming over a latte.

Truthfully, what has surfaced is a new tension in our lives - the collision of what is comfortable & self serving and what is giving & selfless.
Jesus has a call on each of our lives not to fill our pockets or fill our cups with lattes. Rather the call pulls us to the poor, the broken and requires us to extend the grace that has been life changing in our own lives.

If i wake up on days without that tension, i'm useless. I love reading about Peter. He embodied this tension in scripture and it seemed to follow him until his last days. He was a mess, much like myself, but on that struggle and ensuing honesty inside of an imperfect man, God built the church. So, maybe there's hope for strugglers like me.

--- What's the song behind the story for New Day? ---

The song was supposed to be my token pop song.
I went to an Nsync concert a few years back..there, you have it. my musical influence confession of the day. That's been weighing on me and now its finally in the open. (the ticket was free from a friend, if that makes it anymore digestable for your readers)

I saw girls waving their cell phones in the air like they just don't care -- I thought to myself, "I gotta do that".
So a few months later I began writing New Day but it really turned into a song for Liz and our life together thus far.
We used to dance in the kitchen, not very well i might add, in her parents home growing up.
I think her Dad thought that keeping us in the kitchen was better than us making out on the couch. True enough.
Its really a song about hope and though the world seems to be such a mess these last few years, love is strong and i'm thankful to have people in my life to share it with.
I've been thrilled about the response to the song thus far.

Oh, and its about coffee..we love coffee!

--- How do you manage your roles as a touring artist, a worship leader at your church, Ecclesia, as well as a husband and a father of 3? ---

It's hard.
That balance is always out of balance it seems.
Somebody usually suffers from most of the decisions I have to make in how i spend my time and energy.
The gift to me is that our church community is so giving and supportive of what we do.
My kids have come to know this life as normal, though i drive through the nights to get back to them - and time away from them is my greatest wrestle within.
Liz puts up with so much crap from me and my schedule, i owe her a thousand vacations to tropical places, with umbrellas drinks.
I truly never thought I'd ever be this busy in my lifetime, but I love every minute of it and I've been extended mountains of grace from everyone in my life to do this.

--- What artists are you listening to? Any indie artists you recommend? ---

Gatlin Elms will be a household name one day.
I just produced his album with him and he's fantastic.
Look for his album "Oceans & Stars" on iTunes.

One of my favorite singers just did an album with me, Jill Paquette. It was such a thrill to produce music alongside such a talented musician. I haven't heard a release date yet but hoping its soon. She's amazing!

I really enjoy Chris Taylor's new album as well. He's a new artist on BEC and is a great young songwriter.

Of course when I"m driving, I listen to a lot of music -- usually Jon Foreman, Amos Lee, Patty Griffin, John Mayer & Elliot Morris.

--- If you weren't a musician what kind of career would you have? ---

Easy.
CIA.
quit laughing.
When the CIA comes looking for a college dropout musician with no espionage experience or skill -- I'm their man and I'll get my spy on 24/7.

--- What are your hobbies outside of music? ---

My days are full so I usually spend free time hanging with my 3 crazy punk kids and my much smarter, wiser, and all around better human of a wife - Liz. We watch The Office and eat Tex-Mex.
I love Astros baseball games, the beach & George Clooney movies (does that make me a wuss? my wife says its a man crush..)

--- If you were a Major League Baseball Player, what would your at-bat song be and who would you play for? ---

uh, the Astros..hello! :)

I would be baseball's first reincarnated player, returning as a modern day Craig Biggio.

At bat song?
It would have to alternate between -- 'Fly Me to the Moon' by Frank Sinatra (this is my favorite song of all time, btw - it would be so out of place, the pitcher would be distracted, throw me a 90mph fastball down the middle and the rest would be Astros history)

Also, 'Get Up' by James Brown -- i love this song.

That's 82 tickets pouring out of the hi-ball game machine at Sir Chuck E Cheese's.

The luck continues on from the bowling alley to the game room and if i were you, I'd run to the nearest music store and buy my cd. Surely such proximity to my music could bring great fortune to you as well.

Btw, anybody interested in going into business where we serve subpar pizza to kids for outrageous prices, provide outdated gaming for a quarter a pop, use entertainment videos that were edited on a home mac and make a bundle of cash?

Nashvegas & Friends

Liz and I have just returned from the city of music and we had a splendid time.
Actually she shopped and hung out at FIDO (our favorite coffee joint in town) while I was working.
Okay..so calling it "work" may be stretching it.
We had a blast with friends and music folks from around the country.

My brother Chris has 2 daughters.
They are the sweetest girls on the green earth and they clearly have great perspective on where this music career of mine is headed.

T: H., I just saw a limo. I wonder if Robbie is in there.

H: No, Robbie's not a star anymore.

T: Oh. Did he use to have a limo?

H: yes. But it got too expensive.

T: Why?

H: You have to rent studio space, buy lights, the confetti, the confetti machine. It's alot of stuff.

T: Oh. Like a hundred dollars?

H: No. Like 20,000 dollars.

H (to Mom): Is that about right, Mom? (apparently this was the first thing she was unsure of!)

Mom: I don't know exactly but at concerts you get to sell tickets so you make that money back.

H: Oh yeah!

T: Will he be a star again?

H: Well in about 5 years he'll be about as popular as Hanna Montana was when she started.

T: Oh.

Who drives 24 hours straight?

We do.
Not under normal level headed circumstances.
But yesterday, in our eagerness to return home after a great trip to the southeast, we drove straight from Raleigh to Houston.
This is not advisable or even remotely intelligent, however we are glad to be back in the great state of Texas today.
Thanks to everybody in Auburn, Montgomery, Savannah, Cary, and Raleigh for joining us this past week.

In a week that we mounred the death of a friend, my heart has been heavy.
Rather than dwelling on that, i thought i'd give you several goofy pics of me and the joyous times of the last few days.

This is the bronze likeness of Houston's baseball hero Craig Biggio. Man, do i look mean? aaarrghhh!! I've got pro athlete written all over me :)

I took my friend Brad from Nashville to see the Houston Astros home opener, along with my brother Chris. It was a beautiful night at the "Juice Box".

RSB spent Wednesday night playing a show in Montgomery,AL. My friend Trey took me to see Dr. King's church in downtown.

We spent Friday night in Savannah,GA and i just thought this guy was great. Doesn't he just make you smile?

This is the youngest of my 3 animals/kids. He's two and believes in his heart and soul that he was born to rock and roll.
As i rounded the corner the other day, he was sporting these shades and with guitar in hand, he had a strong resemblance to a mini Elvis Costello.

We're working on a kid friendly rendition of "Veronica" as we speak.

Babies and Tex-Mex

Houstonians are good at 2 things.

ONE Pro-creating (married folks, of course)
I've got 3 kids already and I"m only 25..or so..okay..a bit older

TWO Tex-Mex
We know our way around this localized version of Mexico's cuisine

So my friend Tyndall calls me on Sunday morning.
We're playing in Washington D.C. but he leaves me a message.
He says its good news and urgent.
Now, given the above decleration of what occupies the time of Houston folk, I assumed that this was the announcement of child #4 for his family, a rare feet even by Houston standards.

I returned the call, and the excitement was evident in his hello.
"Robbie!"
"Yes..", I replied.

"You won't believe this. Are you sitting down?"
"Yes.." said me.

"CHUY'S is opening a restuarant that is 2 miles from your house", he screamed into the phone.

I was stunned.
Left motionless and without words to speak.
This WAS big news.
Not child #4 level of news, but close.
Not my Houston Astros win the pennant kind of news.
But big, nonetheless.

You see, Chuy's is the King of Tex-Mex in Houston and it would now be close enough to my humble adobe for me to fulfill my creamy jalapeno sauce cravings whenever i want!

Maryland & D.C. - a great weekend!

RSB is just returning from our weekend trip to the east coast.
We had such a great time with Gary G. and his staff in Ocean City, Md.
We made great friends among the 4k students who joined us for the gatherings.

We also got the chance to play a show at Ebeneezer's in D.C. on Sunday night and had a great crowd.
This was our second time to play at the music venue, which is below the Ebeneezer's coffee shop on F street (near Union Station).

I never tire of visiting the nation's capital.
I'm that guy - a map in one hand & camera in the other, off to see sights that i've visited ten times before. I am..a dork.

Love it!

Here are some highlights of the trip:

-the cherry blossoms in full bloom along the waterfront

-hanging with students at the Impact conference in MD

-getting to know BEC recording artist Chris Taylor - awesome guy! (his debut album comes out in April)

-dinner with friends at Utopia in D.C. (on U street) - great live jazz and the best steak i've ever had

- an RSB tradition for many years now, visiting the Lincoln Memorial at midnight..amazing view of the city and the best memorial in town

-happening upon a FREE TIBET rally right in front of the White House

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to see the band.
We really enjoyed our time and hope to make it back soon.

Now for the rest of us, what's your favorite place to visit in D.C.? I've told you ours (Lincoln at night), it's your turn.

I love burgers.
Coca Cola i'm fond of as well, though i've not had one in 3 months because the severe addiction was turning me into tons of fun.
But burgers? still a joyous part of my not so healthy diet.

donkey diapers?

Here's the scene: It's Palm Sunday and RSB was the guest band at a church here in Houston, a great community that is considered large and influential around these parts.

As we begin our first song of the morning, suddenly a large donkey appears and enters the back door, proceeding slowly down the aisle, carrying a man who only slightly resembled even our western ideas of Jesus appearance.
(he actually looked like Robin Williams to me)

After the initial shock of seeing a farm animal in a chapel, I recognized the scene as reminiscent of early childhood days in church easter pageants.
However, i could not escape the question that surely was looming on most everyone mind that day: what if the donkey goes "poo"?
i know, its childish and I should be more spiritual in such a moment.

but..

It's a really nice church and that carpet is really light.
Even Stanley Steamer the carpet cleaner would struggle with such a stain.

After the gathering, I cornered one of the staff guys and posed the important inquiry to him. his response?

DONKEY DIAPERS.

huh?

Well, apparently this dilemma and is not isolated to Houston,Tx alone.
No, it's global.

We were beyond thrilled to see so many responses to our RSB Big Give, in partnership with our friends at Compassion International. Compassion is helping rescue children from the cycle of poverty and disease worldwide, and only does so with friends like you who choose to get personally involved in a child’s life to be an agent of rescue. I’ve told you my story with our little girl Annet in Uganda.

Here are some stories we heard over the weekend:

>Our family has been meaning to sponsor a Compassion child for some time. Thank you for giving us the extra encouragement today to just go ahead and do it. We will be sponsoring Yulitza Geoconda Sanchez Anchundia, an eight year old from Ecuador. We chose her because she had been waiting for over sixth months and was from a Spanish speaking country. 3/4’s of our family of 4 is from Mexico and we like the idea of being able to write letters in Spanish. We have been listening to Robbie Seay Band since Mom read Don Miller’s Through Painted Deserts. Thanks for the beautiful music.

ABC's new show THE BIG GIVE is a huge success, a lovely little show in the spirit of giving and service, and rsb will have a part to play in it.

The band's song NEW DAY will be featured on this sunday's episode, airing at 8pm central time - March 16th.
We're pretty stinking excited about the chance to be involved in the show. Liz and I have watched the last two episodes, and with the exception of the guy who gave a car to the TGI Friday's manager (don't ask), its really a beautiful new series.

i've just walked in the door from a red eye (aka..all nighter) flight from the west coast.

this flight takes place during hours appropriately set aside for sleeping, and yet there we were with a plane load of insomniacs headed home.

its beginning to rain outside which signals i have only a few brief minutes before my eyes close themselves and i hibernate for this entire monday.

Well, no band is complete with having the one member who is obviously in the band solely based on his looks. He's the guy in the band that isn't very talented but who's good looks make up for it. This member is usually referred to as the looker, the heartthrob, the dream boat, the chick magnet, the stud muffin, or the lady killer.

Tyler Halford is that member for Rsb.

Besides playing keys for Rsb Tyler stays busy taking showers, studying bass underneath the phenomenal bass player Brent Nettles, and assisting our guitar player Jerry in his studio.

He is a good man, and he is loved by the whole RSB family.

the next installment of RSB's best of 2007!
This week we shine the spotlight on the very talented and youngest member of the RSB management team, Brent Nettles. He is the newest guy to be inducted into the crazy world of RSB and we love having him on board.

Brent's love for chicken tenders, french fries and hot dogs keeps us all young and in shape! When he's not running the RSB office, he's running marathons, playing in the Houston Tennis & Polo Leagues, as well as, designing all the RSB apparel.

Some day he'll be the President of the United States but until then, you'll find him as the President of the RSB Fan Club.

Chickens, a new dress & the kingdom of God?

This is Annet.
She got a new dress.
Not the one pictured, but a new red one.
and a new pair of shoes.
and some soda.
and some photos taken of her family.
and..a chicken for her father.

Uh, yes ... a chicken.

My wife Liz sent Annet, our sponsor child in Uganda, $10 last month as a small gift.
I had no idea.
What's ten bucks these days?
$9 got me a ticket to see a film last night.
$10 gets me a chick fil a #1 value size and piece of cheesecake.
I have to admit, a lot of times i hand over my card to the clerk and have no idea the amount being charged.
that's horrible, i know.

But that extra money for Annet, on top of the 32 bucks we send every month, was huge for her family.

I received a letter in the mail this week from Annet herself, thanking "Sir Robbie Seay" for the generosity that has meant so much to her family.
Are you kidding?
My heart wanted to fall to the ground.

I'm a selfish credit card swiping American gorging myself on chicken sandwiches and living my life oblivious to the fact that my more generous wife had sent some extra money to Annet her family half way around the planet.
And she was thanking me?
(trust me, the good in my family comes from Liz)

This letter, written on purple notebook paper, has derailed my thoughts and priorities today and reminded me why i got involved with a group like Compassion International in the first place.

God has called me to something more than just music, more than my neighborhood, more than my comforts. The Kingdom of God is a new dress & and a chicken for her - not credit cards and chicken sandwiches for me.
(no offense to the folks at chick fil a who play rsb in their fine establishments).

God is calling us all to be a part of seeing His kingdom coming to earth, just like it exists in heaven.
that prayer - that calling begins with the poor and the oppressed.

Compassion International works exclusively with local communities around the globe - specifically churches in villages and communities in 24 countries, rescuing close to 1 million children from poverty. My $32 a month helps my specific child, Annet, in Uganda participate in programs that educate her, feed her and shares the story of the love and hope found in the gospels.

Jeremy "Jmac" McCasland, at the age of three, became the youngest child to be accepted into the Mickey Mouse Club. He went on to be a Broadway star, a winner of three Latin Grammy Awards, and co-writer of many hit singles in the eighties with artists such as: Jermaine Jackson, Air Supply, Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen. He did all this before his thirteenth birthday.

Jerry Nettles hails from the Apalachian mountains, where he spent years widdling arrowheads and playing banjo with his cousins moses and jethro in the local pubs.

His story is not unlike yours and mine, though he rarely speaks about the two years he spent working the nightshift at ihop in West Virginia, a season in his life he often refers to quite sincerly as the "rooty tooty fresh and fruity" years.

He loves bears, english literature, vanilla ice, and hearing himself speak aloud in rooms that have distinct acoustical architecture.

and oh, by the way, he plays a lovely guitar for the rsb and we love him dearly.

So not everyone can have a brush with greatness, or get to hang out with
the coolest of cool celebrities........ you know, the A list (Reality
Show) Celebrities.

Well as I was scanning the magazine rack at the Denver airport a few
weeks ago I looked up and saw a man who personifies the before
mentioned "Reality Show Greatness."

It was....... Flava Flave!!!!!

Now he was not on the cover of a tabloid or music magazine, he was
standing right next to me! He is not hard to locate in a crowd with
his huge clock he wears around his neck and the pink and black
striped fur coat he was wearing with full pride.

Now I can't say I'm even really sure why he is famous, I know he was
in the rap group Public Enemy back in the day, but why is he famous
now? We've all seen him on various reality shows on MTV and VH1
(anyone find it strange that these shows no longer actually play
music videos) although I'm not sure why?

Anyway, here is my photo proof of the encounter. He was a nice guy
and insisted on a picture with me and my beautiful wife Leslie and
our daughter Avery.

RYAN OWENS, bass player of the year!!!

welcome back to our lovely corner of blogdom.
today, we're spotlighting and awarding BPOTY honors to none other than our very own, sir RYAN OWENS.
Known simply as COACH to his bandmates and close friends alike, Ryan has recently drawn the attention of many around the US, becoming prolific in changing out alternators in really crappy diesel vans in 20 minutes or less. (note blog entry from late fall in which our piece of junk broke down, only to have ryan and a strange, yet lovely man named Johnny come to the rescue)

Now, this is an unofficial award that is voted on by no one person and come to find out, only I am aware of its mere existence.
Nonetheless, no bass player on the planet has as many basses, runs half marathons with little prep time, and could be a pro skater if he wasn't old enough now to be Tank's father and primary caregiver.

Many of you know our long time and beloved drummer has moved to bigger and brighter things in Dallas, Tx, leaving rsb wandering alone without a good pocket-living groove sultan, such as Mr. Hamilton himself.

Dan Hamilton was a part of our music for almost a decade and we lift our glass to offer a very heartfelt thank you to he and Jill for being a part of our music and lives. We miss you guys.

We've moved on, having recruited the young talents of the man known simply as TANK. i refer to him as THE TANK, though others including his aunts and crazy cousins in easttexas call him Michael Lisenbe.

The Tank enjoys long walks on the beach, a competive game of bridge, and bird watching along the texas coast.

I've asked all the guys to share a little insight for you lovely folk into their worlds, and who doesn't love a good old fashioned "best of" list.

I've just returned from Kingsville, TX where i shared music with friends at Texas ATM-Kingsville.
I had a great time with my friend Mike Cervantes and feasted on the best bbq anywhere in the country, i promise!
the great Joe Cotten's.

You know i love a good meal with friends and this was a redneck culinary highlight of 2008.
Jessica Simpson brought her Dallas Cowboy friend Mr. Romo to Joe's last week (though i've heard they are no longer an item, so hope the bbq wasn't a factor)
By the time they left, the waiter told us, half the town was waiting in the parking lot.

the rain and cold of south texas was all that greeted me as i walked towards our car, but i was a happy man.

thanks to everybody in Kingsville. I love heading south, especially to be on campus with you guys.

cherry limeade's.
cheese tater tots.
vanilla malt.

i do know for a fact that my friend david crowder eats foot long chili cheese coneys coneys covered in mustard.
that's just gross.

but here's the big dilemna - do i tip?

the dude that walks 10 feet to bring me the meal of champions seems nice enough, but does that stroll justify a tip? really?

if we're going to start tipping fast food employees, it should be the amazing well oiled chicken serving machine at my local chick-fil-a.
these guys rock!
they're efficient and they do that one illusive fast food task that no other chain seems to do ever - they get the order right!

i would like to clarify one excepton in that i would tip anyone who serves me a beverage or meal while roller skating.
you see that occasionally and that seems tipable enough.
if they wipe out carrying my order, even more for the mere entertainment of it all.

so, do you tip at sonic? and what should this be costing me - 10%? 15%?

Though it seems trivial, this is important. we need to be in agreement the next time we go the great american drive in and cast our generosity on the wait staff.

2008 - rsb needs your help!

we couldn't be more excited about this new year - and we are so thankful for the support of all of you during 2007.

there is much happening in rsb land so i'll get straight to the point.

many of you know that American Idol has included RISE in several of their ads airing on Fox during the holiday season. All of us are thrilled beyond belief!
There is one little problem.

rsb is not quite in the same league as say...Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, or Justin Guarini (okay, maybe justin).

because of our low profile, we're afraid that the fine folks at FOX and the rest of this great country may not appreciate what great fans and support we have.
enter YOU.
you can help send the word to the country and all at American Idol that this little band from texas might just have reason to stick around and make some music for years to come.

here's what we are asking of you -

ONE

its 3 days until christmas and there's no sign that santa will grant my holiday wish of a 4 week trip to europe or my request to visit the international space station sometime in 2008.

Friends.
i know. i know.
we're having a hard time believing it as well.
i mean i've spent many a night trying to dance like Justin Guarini & sing like Ruben Studdard - neither worked out too well, mind you - but never dreamed we'd be a part of the new season in some small way.

The fine folks at American Idol are playing RISE on their new commercials promoting the upcoming season starting in January - and we're thrilled about being a part of the ads!
What? No my uncle does not work for Simon Cowell, why would you say that? anyway...

Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP)

i met some great folks in north carolina last week that you guys have to check out. my friends at five sided coffee are producing organic locally grown coffee and giving any profits away to several key missional causes around the world. the coffee is great and this company is benefiting the poor with its proceeds. check them out at FIVEsidedCOFFEE.com btw, if you are connected with a company of any kind that is seeking to produce a great product, pay fair wages to workers, and use there entrepenuerial skills to benefit the poor - please post a comment and tell us about them. its important that we all support companies like this as we strive to join a missional movement that will bring about whole change in the world. blessings everybody, robbie

friends,
rsb is still alive.
we've just gone through the longest 9 days on the road that we've ever experienced and are still breathing.

i'm laughing out loud on the plane right now as i head back to Houston for a few days off.
Just thinking of all that seemed go wrong for us is hilarious:

saturday- dan misses the flight due to pneumonia. we were left scrambling for a drummer in the atlanta area and found a new friend in COLE. He showed up and played the entire set without sound checking or rehearsing with us at all! he was great - thanks cole!

monday- drummer # 2 shows up in atlanta. the great TANK Lisenbe from Houston arrived and has been fantastic. He is now referred to as MR TANK on the road with all the boys. tank pretty much lays down the fat beats and gives the kids what they're after -- rock and roll music.

tuesday- Brandon is driving the van around midnight when our lights begin to fade to black. the van dies in a small town east of chatanooga. we make it to the wal mart parking lot and tried to fix it ourselves (uh..musicians and car repair - bad combo). we get hotel rooms there and replace a bad battery in the a.m. in time to hit the road about 9am.

wednesday- two hours after departing the first breakdown, #2 hits while driving through Nashville. this time we knew it was the alternator. we pulled over on a side street thought for sure we'd have to cancel the INDY show. After approaching an elderly man who was fixing his own car, we bought an alternator, replaced it with our new friend and fellow musician JOHNNY, and made it in time for Indianapolis.
the stories from the old guy are classic!! we'll be posting audio soon of our conversations with the J man.

thursday- bad traffic in chicago had us running way late for the milwaukee radio interviews (sorry FISH crew) but we did stop at culver's (is that right? i can't remember) and that was a great hamburger.

friday- early morning flights had us wiped most of the day but spending time with my brother chris and pastor rick mcKinley from portland was great for all the guys.

with all that's gone wrong, its been one of best weeks of the band's life.
we've met so many great folks in Milwaukee, camp hill, maryland, d.c., atlanta, Indianapolis, north carolina, and south carolina.

thanks to everybody who's come out to the shows this week.
its been a joy to meet you and have you share this music with us!

this was some random display of the pres and first lady enjoying an atm tailgate party or something.

RSB Fitness World 2007

after two long weeks of cd release events, rsb is back in houston.
we've had a blast playing the new album so far and are preparing to head back out very soon.

as i traveled last week, my wife called with 2 demands : take her on vacation and exercise more.

and so, i just returned from a 2 mile jog and i feel as if the world will soon fall upon my head.
i know this may just flat out shock most of you, but ... i'm out of shape!
i got these new shoes, you see, and i was thinking maybe they would provide the competitive edge that i needed as i prepare for a 5k run that my wife has signed me up for.
nope.
i just need to run more, pretty basic i guess.

so here's what i'm asking: how can i pass the time better as i run?
surely some of you fine folk have some good advice for a poor lad like me
do you listen to music? do you daydream? do you count steps?
i don't know..i'm just looking for some help here, people

Dallas show TOMORROW!

hey everybody.
i hope you avoided most tasks of manual labor on this labor day.
rsb enjoyed a few days off but we're really excited about tomorrow's show in DALLAS.
